The DMK, a party that invokes Periyar’s rationalist legacy and publicly opposes superstition, is facing allegations that astrology is influencing discussions over its political succession. According to a report published by Vikatan, former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s wife, Durga Stalin, has been consulting astrologers and is reportedly pushing for Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin to take over the party’s leadership.
The report, citing DMK leaders, claims that astrologers have advised Durga Stalin that Udhayanidhi’s horoscope is favourable, while Stalin’s planetary positions are currently unfavourable. This has allegedly added to tensions within the Stalin family over the question of succession.
Astrologers Favour Udhayanidhi, Claims Report
According to the report, Durga Stalin has been consulting Salem-based astrologer Balaji Hasan and following his recommendations for religious rituals and remedies. She reportedly performed special prayers at the Varahi temple in Kanchipuram recently.
The report quotes DMK leaders as claiming that astrologers have advised that Udhayanidhi’s horoscope is strong and that handing the party over to him would be the right decision.
Citing these leaders, Vikatan reports that Durga Stalin has been urging her husband to transfer the party’s leadership to Udhayanidhi, arguing that Stalin’s current astrological period is unfavourable.
Stalin, however, is said to have little faith in such advice and has reportedly rejected the suggestion, leading to disagreements within the family.
These claims are based on the accounts of unnamed DMK leaders cited in the report. They have not been independently verified.
Durga Stalin’s Temple Visits and the DMK’s Electoral Setback
The report also claims that Durga Stalin had undertaken several temple visits and performed rituals, including an alleged camel puja, ahead of the elections.
Despite these efforts, Stalin reportedly lost his Kolathur constituency, while the DMK lost power in Tamil Nadu.
The report quotes DMK leaders as insisting that political success depends on hard work rather than astrology, even as it alleges that consultations with astrologers continue within the party leadership’s family.
Periyar’s Rationalism Versus Political Practice
The allegations raise questions about the gap between the DMK’s public ideological positioning and the private practices attributed to its leadership.
Periyar E.V. Ramasamy, whose rationalist legacy the DMK frequently invokes, was a vocal critic of astrology and superstition. The report opens with his position that human success depends on hard work, knowledge and effort, rather than planets and stars.
If the allegations are accurate, the reported role of astrological advice in discussions about the DMK’s succession would present a striking contradiction for a party that claims Periyar as its ideological guide.
