The MK Stalin-led DMK government in Tamil Nadu has once again been made to eat crow with the Madras High Court directing the Tamil Nadu police to permit the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Pathasanchalan (march past rallies) across the state on November 6.
The court also added that the DMK government would invite contempt of court proceedings otherwise.
RSS was supposed to hold its rally on the occassion of Vijayadasami which incidentally happens to be on October 2 this year.
Initially, the Tamil Nadu police had granted permission for the rally. However, owing to pressure from its alliance partners like the VCK, the Tamil Nadu denied the permission for the rally. This order came despite the the Madras High Court granting permission to the RSS to take processions on October 2, subject to certain conditions.
Following this the RSS Tiruvallur Joint Secretary R. Karthikeyan filed a contempt of court petition against the state Home Secretary, Director General of Police and Superintendent of Police seeking interim direction from the court to allow the rally.
Justice GK Ilanthiraiyan on Friday (30 September 2022) directed the state government and the police to give the permission and update the court by October 3.
The judge also warned that if no decision is taken or permission is not given, the court will take up the contempt application and proceed to pass orders.
