Gets invited and later gets insulted: DMK leaves Owaisi red faced

On January 2, Dr.Mastan the minority wing secretary of the DMK met AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi at the latter’s residence in Hyderabad to invite him to participate in the conference organized by the DMK on January 6 in Chennai.

This had led to speculations about the DMK trying to coax Owaisi into forging an alliance for the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections as the party had put up a commendable performance in the recently concluded Bihar elections.

However, immediately after the meeting, the DMK issued a statement denying reports of Mastan having extended an invitation to Owaisi.

This statement came after local Muslim parties like the Manidhaneya Makkal Katchi, Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazagham and other Muslim groups came down heavy on the DMK as they sensed threat to their local Muslim vote bank from an outsider Muslim Owasi.

Now, sources close to the DMK have said that it was DMK MP T.R. Baalu who extended the invitation over phone to Owaisi. However, he himself later is said to have asked him to not come after facing backlash from Muslim parties in Tamil Nadu.

A furious Owaisi supposedly said “I haven’t come to your doorsteps. It was you who came to me. Let’s see what happens in the future”.
