Gang hacks a man to death in broad daylight in Chennai

S Arumugam, a 36-year-old man who ran a finance company, was hacked to death by a four-member gang in broad daylight at Aminjikarai in Chennai.

Two persons have surrendered in a court while the other two are absconding.

The CCTV footage of the incident has gone viral sending shivers and making one wonder about the law and order situation of the state.

The incident happened on Wednesday at around 1.30 pm. Arumugham who was riding pillion on a bike with his employee Ramesh was intercepted by four men on two two-wheelers. He began to run on the main road as the gang parked their vehicles and chased him. They caught him near the road median and gave repeated blows with sharp weapons. Videos shot by onlookers that went viral on social media showed Arumugham battling for life. Ramesh was let go by the gang.

The attackers did not seem to care that they were in full public view. A few people alerted the control room and a team of the Aminjikarai police rushed to the spot. The body was sent to Government Kilpauk Medical College for a postmortem.

The deceased was a resident of Vaidhyanathan Street in Chetpet and reportedly had six cases, including that of murder, and harassment of women pending against him. Arumugham allegedly used to attack borrowers for defaulting on the dues and threatened them often.

Though the motive of the murder is not clear, police suspect that the killing could be the fallout of Arumugham’s enmity with such defaulters.
