Former Union Finance Minister and senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram has peddled an already-busted fake news about Prime Minister Narendra Modi promising ₹15 lakh to every Indian’s bank account.
Chidambaram had put out a tweet in light of Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling out Congress’ ‘revdi’ (freebie) culture when the latter was addressing Karnataka’s BJP workers.
Prime Minister Modi had urged BJP cadres to “debunk Congress’ lies and freebie culture” by pointing out the unfulfilled promises in the states of Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan.
“Himachal people are still waiting for Congress’ guarantees to be fulfilled. They’ve promised many things, but nothing has been done.Rajasthan people too, on Congress’ guarantees, they’re going on protest asking ‘What happened? 4 years have passed’. Till date, guarantees remain guarantees. Congress means Guarantee of Lies, Congress means Guarantee of Corruption, Congress means Guarantee of Nepotism.”, PM Modi said.
He further added “Congress is in such a state where neither it can give truthful guarantees and you yourself know my young friends, Congress’ warranty has already expired. When the Warranty of Congress has already expired, how can it possess any Guarantee then.”
A day after PM Modi made these remarks Chidambaram took to his social media to peddle the oft-peddled and already-busted lies about PM Modi promising ₹15 lakh in every Indian’s bank account.
Chidambaram wrote “When Mr Modi promised in 2014 that he will put Ra 15 lakhs in the bank account of every Indian, was it a freebie (revdi) or a welfare scheme? Was the BJP a “party of lies”?”

It is to be noted that PM Modi never made any promise about ₹15 lakh in every Indian’s bank account. This lie has been busted a number of times as PM Modi during a public meeting had only made a comparison to the amount of black money stashed abroad.
Despite the lie being busted by many reports many times, the Harvard-educated former Finance Minister of India has peddled fake news to target PM Modi.
