Following immense pressure from BJP Youth Wing Tamil Nadu, the Tiruchirappalli District Police have arrested four individuals for allegedly burning an effigy of the Hindu deity Lord Ram and circulating a video of the act on social media. The arrests were made following the registration of a case under the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The incident occurred on September 28 during an event organized by the “Aintham Tamilar Sangam” in Ayanputhur village. According to a police press release, a flex banner featuring an image of Lord Ram was beaten with sandals, set on fire, and the act was filmed. The video, which surfaced on a Facebook page called “Aintham Tamilar” on September 30, showed participants chanting “Praise Ravana” and included contact numbers for the organization.
Based on a complaint from a social media monitoring officer, the Cyber Crime police registered a case (FIR No. 18/25) on October 2. The charges include sections 192, 196(1)(a), 197, 299, 302, and 353(2) of the BNS, related to intent to provoke a breach of peace, outraging religious feelings, and criminal intimidation.
The first accused, Aadikalaraj from Pudukkottai District, was arrested on October 2. Three others—Thilakeswaran (Ramanathapuram), Napoleon (Namakkal), and Vasanthakumar (Kallakurichi)—were arrested and sent to judicial custody on October 3. The police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and more arrests are possible.
Trichy District Superintendent of Police, Mr. S. Selvanagarathnam, issued a stern warning that strict legal action will be taken against anyone posting or sharing content on social media that incites riots, disrupts public peace, or hurts religious sentiments.
