EVR Arch In Madurai Demolished After High Court Order

The Madurai district administration on Saturday (18 July 2026) night demolished the ‘Periyar Thorana Vaayil’ entrance arch at KK Nagar, implementing the directions of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court to remove arches that obstruct the free flow of traffic, as reported in The Hindu.

The demolition began shortly after midnight amid heavy security arrangements. Police personnel, Fire and Rescue Services teams, an ambulance with medical staff, and other officials were deployed at the site around 12 a.m. as a precautionary measure. Authorities cordoned off the stretch near the arch and restricted vehicular movement to ensure public safety before demolition work commenced at around 12.30 a.m.

The action followed a recent order of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court directing the Madurai Corporation and other authorities to remove the K.K. Nagar entrance arch along with other arches identified as causing traffic congestion.

The court issued the directions while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking the removal of entrance arches located near the MGR Bus Stand at Mattuthavani, on the Therkuvasal-Airport Road near Villapuram, and on Theni Road near Virattipathu.

According to the petition, Madurai’s vehicular traffic has increased significantly over the past 15 years due to the expansion of markets, bus stands, industrial estates and the establishment of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court. The petitioner argued that the concrete arches occupy valuable road space, create traffic bottlenecks, impede the free movement of vehicles and compromise road safety.

The petition further contended that the arches, originally erected to mark entry points into the city, had outlived their purpose and become obsolete. It also stated that unauthorised parking around these structures further aggravated congestion at key junctions.

The latest demolition comes months after a fatal accident during the removal of another entrance arch. In February 2025, an earthmover operator was killed when a portion of the ‘Nakkeerar Thorana Vaayil’ arch near the MGR Bus Stand in Mattuthavani collapsed on the demolition vehicle.
