In a direct challenge to what he describes as systemic bias in mainstream knowledge repositories, tech billionaire Elon Musk has launched Grokipedia, an open-source encyclopedia built by his artificial intelligence company xAI. The platform, which went live on 27 October 2025, promises to offer a “massive improvement” over Wikipedia by providing depth and neutrality, free of charge and without usage limits.
The announcement comes just weeks after Musk first proposed the idea on his social media platform X, stating that Grokipedia was a “necessary step towards the xAI goal of understanding the Universe.” The launch appears to be a response to long-standing criticisms from Musk and others, including Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger, who have accused the platform of being “hopelessly biased” by left-wing activists and “woke ideology.”
A Contrast in Content: Godhra and George Floyd
The fundamental difference in editorial approach is immediately apparent when comparing entries on both platforms. For instance, the entry for the 2002 Godhra train burning showcases a stark contrast.
Wikipedia’s opening paragraph describes the event where 59 Hindu pilgrims were killed, noting that “the cause of the fire remains disputed,” and quickly pivots to the subsequent Gujarat riots.

Grokipedia’s entry states unequivocally that it was an “arson attack” by a “mob of around 1,000–2,000 local Muslims,” citing forensic reports of pre-procured petrol and court convictions.

An even more pronounced divergence is seen in the entries for George Floyd. Wikipedia identifies him as an “African American man who was murdered by a white police officer” and focuses on the subsequent global protests.

Grokipedia leads with Floyd’s “lengthy criminal record.” It details the official medical examiner’s report citing contributing factors like “fentanyl intoxication” and “cardiovascular disease,” alongside the circumstances of his death.

Supporters of the new platform argue that Grokipedia’s inclusion of such details provides crucial context often omitted from mainstream narratives. A user on X commented, “The nuance and detail on Grokipedia is FAR superior to Wikipedia and is clearly not pushing any ideologies. Corrections like this are critical to our AI future.”

According to Musk, Grokipedia is “fully open source, so anyone can use it for anything at no cost.” The platform, powered by the Grok AI model, launched with nearly 900,000 generated articles and features like transparent edit histories and AI-validated user changes.
