A Special Sub-Inspector (SSI) in Virudhunagar district has been suspended following accusations of sexually assaulting a female police officer at Rajapalayam South Police Station.
The accused, 52-year-old Mohanraj, is married with two children and resides in the Malaiyadipatti Police Station quarters in Rajapalayam. He has reportedly struggled with habitual alcohol consumption.
The incident occurred when Mohanraj reported to duty in an intoxicated state. Observing his condition, colleagues directed him to rest in a room upstairs. However, while there, he allegedly approached a female officer and made inappropriate advances. Despite her attempts to avoid him, he reportedly assaulted her. The female officer cried for help and alerted her colleagues, who intervened and rescued her. CCTV footage from the police station is said to have captured the incident.
The victim lodged a formal complaint with senior officials, prompting an investigation. Mohanraj was sent to the Rajapalayam Government Hospital, where medical tests confirmed he was under the influence of alcohol during the incident.
As a result, Virudhunagar District Superintendent of Police Kannan ordered Mohanraj’s immediate transfer to the Armed Reserve Police. He was subsequently suspended pending further investigation and departmental action.
The incident has raised concerns about workplace safety for women in law enforcement and sparked calls for stricter accountability within the police force. An inquiry into the matter is underway.
