“Drugged People Threaten Driver With Knife, Seize Cell Phone & Cash”: Security Concerns At Kasimedu Port; Chennai Container Transport Association Urges Action

The Chennai Container Transport Owners Association has lodged a complaint with the Kasimedu fishing port police station, expressing the urgent need for enhanced security measures. They cited incidents of knife-point robberies targeting lorry drivers during the early morning hours in the port area.

The association highlighted that areas spanning Minjur, Manali, Mathavaraam, Ponneri, and Thiruvetriyur are particularly vulnerable to serious robberies by individuals under the influence of ganja. These perpetrators obstruct lorries and steal cash and cellphones from drivers. As a solution, the association has requested continuous patrols from Surya Narayana Road to Ports Zero Gate to safeguard the area. The association has also voiced concerns that if the menace is not contained, it could spread to urban areas, causing distress among the general public.

Speaking to the reporters a member said, “There is no security from the toll gate to the zero gate Power Kuppam. At nights, five to six people after smoking ganja often come to the drivers threaten them with a knife, seize their cell phone and cash  regularly. On Friday last week, there was a similar complaint, four drivers were robbed of their money and mobile phones by two people at the same time, the name of the transport was Sri Om Shakti Transport and the owner of the transport was Dhanasekhar, his driver immediately called 100 during the incident, and within 10 minutes the authorities came and caught one of the perpetrator on the spot, they brought the accused to the N4 station and seized his cell phone and bike.”  Later he said, “It is happening for the past one year. Only last month the corporation had put the public lights here, there was no light before.
