A 24-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly assaulting and sexually abusing a 75-year-old woman at her residence in Paravakkal village near Gudiyattam in Vellore district.
The accused has been identified as Ajith Kumar, son of Pandu, a resident of Paravakkal village. Ajith Kumar, who works as a melam (traditional percussion) artist, is alleged to have entered the elderly woman’s house in an inebriated condition a few days ago.
According to police sources, the elderly woman, who lives alone, was at home when the accused trespassed into her house late at night and demanded money for his expenses. When she told him that she did not have any money, an argument reportedly broke out. It is alleged that the accused then assaulted the woman and sexually abused her. During the incident, the woman lost consciousness.
Believing that the woman had died, the accused allegedly fled the spot. The following day, neighbours noticed that the woman’s house was found open and became suspicious. Upon entering the house, they found her lying unconscious with serious injuries. The woman’s son was informed, following which he rushed to the spot and took her to the Gudiyattam Government Hospital.
After initial treatment, the woman was discharged and taken home. However, her son noticed that she remained fearful and distressed, especially during the night. On questioning her further, the woman reportedly disclosed that a young man named Ajith Kumar had entered her house under the influence of alcohol, demanded money, assaulted her, and sexually abused her.
She was subsequently re-admitted to the Gudiyattam Government Hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment.
Based on a complaint lodged at the Gudiyattam Taluk Police Station, police registered a case and launched an investigation under the direction of Gudiyattam Deputy Superintendent of Police Suresh. The probe was led by Taluk Inspector Sivashankaran and his team.
During the investigation, police stated that the allegations against Ajith Kumar were substantiated. It was further revealed that the accused was under the influence of ganja at the time of the incident. He was arrested and later produced before a judicial magistrate, who remanded him to judicial custody.
