Dravidian Model: Public Catches Drunken Police Driving Rashly In Chennai, Transferred To Armed Reserve Police

A resident named Vignesh who hails from Kundrathur, Chennai and employed in a private company was riding a two-wheeler with his cousin on Tambaram Mannivakkam road in the Mudichur area. They encountered a situation where a black car deliberately collided with their two-wheeler and then fled the scene. He fell from the vehicle and the car sped away and hit a few other vehicles on the way.

In response to this reckless act, Vignesh, along with other motorists, intervened to stop the car and questioned the driver about his dangerous driving behavior. To the surprise of the public, it was discovered that the car belonged to a police officer, as indicated by the police name plate on the dashboard.

Furthermore, the car reportedly had a police uniform with the name “Sri Rama Durai” on it. Despite being confronted by the public, the police officer appeared oblivious to the situation, leading to suspicions of intoxication. Subsequently, the officer struggled to provide coherent answers to the inquiries directed at him. The authorities were informed about the incident and intervened to pacify the crowd, directing the police officer to leave the scene. Subsequent police investigations unveiled that the officer in question, Ramadurai, is affiliated with the Chitalapakkam police station and had been assigned duty at the counting center located at MIT College.

The incident was captured on video, which quickly circulated online, causing widespread concern. Consequently, authorities took action by transferring Chief Constable Ramadurai to the armed forces, in light of the controversy surrounding his conduct.

The public didn’t respond well to the decision made by the higher officials to transfer the intoxicated police officer to the armed reserve police. One netizen queried, “Were the armed reserve established for criminals? Are all its members criminals?”

Another netizen expressed, “It is unfortunate that transfer is the only punishment given to government servants when they commit crimes. It is not known how long it will continue. A government servant should be punished more than the punishment given to a Non-government servant committing the same offence.” Yet another netizen questioned, “Why is that every police officer who makes mistake are changed to sensitive armed reserve? What if he takes weapon similar to driving a car?

A different netizen asked, “Isn’t drunk driving an offense that warrants arrest? Why is the punishment only a transfer?”
