Close on the heels of an incident in Tiruttani, where ganja-addicted teenage school dropouts assaulted a migrant worker, another violent crime involving a guest worker has been reported from Coimbatore.
Police in Coimbatore on Monday, 29 December 2025, arrested two men in connection with the murder of a 22-year-old guest worker from West Bengal near the Ukkadam area of the city. The deceased was identified as R Suraj, a native of Midnapore district in West Bengal, who had been residing at the Pullukadu housing unit and working at an eatery in the Karumbukadai locality.
According to police, the accused have been identified as A Bajith Khan (30), an autorickshaw driver attached to the city police home guard team, and his associate R Prakash (38). Both men are residents of Karumbukadai.
The incident occurred at around 10.30 PM on Sunday, 28 December 2025. Suraj was standing near the 16th block of the Pullukadu housing unit and speaking with his friend Raketh (21), who is also from West Bengal. At that time, Bajith Khan allegedly arrived at the spot driving a passenger autorickshaw in a rash and negligent manner and hit Suraj.
When Suraj questioned the manner of driving, a heated argument broke out. Prakash soon joined Bajith Khan, and the two allegedly abused Suraj and Raketh, threatening them with dire consequences if they did not apologise. Police said that when Suraj refused to apologise, Bajith Khan punched him on the nose with force.
Suraj reportedly suffered a serious injury and collapsed on the road. Raketh ran to Suraj’s residence to alert his family members. Meanwhile, members of the public rushed Suraj to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for treatment. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries on Monday afternoon.
Following the incident, the Bazaar police registered a murder case against both accused. They were arrested and subsequently remanded to judicial custody. Further investigation into the case is ongoing.
