A sexual harassment complaint filed by a female student against a professor at Anna University has triggered widespread concern, with police launching an inquiry into the allegations.
According to officials, the student submitted a complaint at the Chennai Police Commissioner’s office, accusing a faculty member, Gnanavel Babu, of subjecting her to sustained sexual harassment over an extended period.
In her complaint, the student alleged that the professor had been harassing her for the past three years through repeated phone calls, inappropriate conversations, and sexually explicit messages. She further stated that the harassment occurred both in person and via phone communication, including late-night calls.
The student also claimed that similar inappropriate messages were sent by the professor to her friends and alleged that multiple students may have been affected by his conduct. She informed police that she had previously raised the issue with the university’s internal committee. Following the complaint, authorities initiated an inquiry and transferred the case to the All Women Police Station in Abiramapuram. A Deputy Commissioner of Police is supervising the investigation.
As part of the probe, police have seized the student’s mobile phone and are examining the messages allegedly sent by the accused. Officials said the authenticity of the claims is being verified and that further legal action will be taken based on the findings.
The complaint was filed on Thursday (26 March 2026) evening, and the investigation is currently in its initial stages.
The incident comes against the backdrop of a 2024 case at Anna University involving the sexual assault of a student by a DMK functionary, which had drawn significant public attention. Police said the present case is being investigated independently, with further updates expected as the inquiry progresses.
