On 18 June 2025, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faced significant backlash after making an insensitive comment about the recent plane crash in Ahmedabad. In an apparent dig at the BJP-led central government, she mocked the tragedy, saying that the “double engine” government had “taken off and gone.” This drew significant backlash from all corners.
Mamata Banerjee commented, “Your double engine government only bulldoze the people, and you are an autocrat government, but you cannot keep protection to the people.” She then added, laughing, “Double engine was just take off and double engine…,” mimicking the flight’s crash in a mocking manner. Her actions, coupled with her words, drew outrage as many felt it was a disrespectful way to make a political point using a tragedy.

How inhumane and heartless must a person be to crack a joke about a tragic plane crash—just to score political points?
