Full-time actor, Bigg Boss host and part-time politician Kamal Haasan, the founder leader of his Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) party, finds himself at the receiving end of public ire after he asked people to not blame the DMK government for the flood fiasco in Chennai. He even blamed the common people for building homes in lakes and marshlands.
At a press conference on 8 December 2023, he blamed climate change for the heavy rains due to Cylone Michaung. He also peddled fake news saying the city received 56 cm of rain in 24 hours. This surely does not match with the IMD figures.
“Instead of complaining and pointing out the shortcomings, it is time to set aside criticism against the government”. He also said we must take necessary precautions ourselves.
He said, “Criticising the government can be set aside for now, we can criticise them later.”
“It is not possible for the government machinery to reach one crore people, so we must be prepared by ourselves,” he added.
Blaming the common people for purchasing homes in low-lying areas, he said, “We are just grabbing land, covering it with sand and we are the ones doing it. The government comes in later. It is our collective mistake, we have to rectify it.”
This buttressing by Kamal Haasan to the DMK government has not gone well with the public with the Opposition parties lashing out at the actor for his apathy.
BJP Tamil Nadu State Secretary Dr. SG Suryah pulled no punches in lambasting the actor for his comments and asked him if he has no shame to leave the people in lurch for the sake of an MP seat and money given by Udhayanidhi Stalin.
He said “Kamal Haasan, the head of Makkal Needhi Maiam, actor, Bigg Boss host is saying that the government cannot be blamed for what happened in Chennai. He is saying that DMK government is not responsible for anything and that everything happened just like that. It has been 4 days since the cyclone and rains stopped. People are going without food and water. Water has not receded in many areas. There is no milk. People don’t have anything.”
Going guns blazing on the actor, SG Suryah said “For 1 MP seat, for money given by Udhayanidhi, shamelessly and dishonorably, you are saying that Chennai has no problem and that the government can’t be blamed. They say that you’re going to contest from South Chennai. If you come here, people will slipper you. You’re saying that there is no problem and that the DMK government has done everything, do you have any shame?”
Suryah also dared Kamal Haasan saying “For the 1 seat and money, you will sell off the people is it? I dare you to come now to South Chennai. I will take you to 100 places in South Chennai. Whatever you said about the government can’t be blamed, what good the government has done, do you have the guts to say to the people here? I am challenging you from here – Taramani, Ward Number 178. If you have the courage you come or send your party person, and say the same thing you told from your ivory tower to the people here. Let’s see if they accept and then we will see.”
