The appointment of Rajya Sabha MPs S Jaishankar and Nirmala Sitharaman in the Modi Cabinet has sent the Dravidianist supporters and the DMK in a tizzy. The leftists in other parts of the country were also outraging over the lack of Muslim representatives in the cabinet.
Many Dravidianists on social media outraged that both the Union ministers (Sitharaman and Jaishankar) had it easy and were handed the cabinet posts on a platter due to their caste privilege.
This was mainstreamed by a DMK spokesperson on a TV news debate hosted by News18 Tamil Nadu. DMK’s Tamilan Prasanna talking about this “issue” said, “The respect given to the 3% “Noolibans” is not given to 18% Muslims.”
He further said, “Nirmala Sitharaman has no eligibility and yet, she became a minister. Who are you to say that 18% Muslims have no eligibility to become a minister? We will not keep quiet; we will talk like that only“

In Tamil Nadu, the Dravidianists have made it a slur to call the Brahmin population “Noolibans” a wordplay on Taliban who wear the sacred thread.
In the news debate, only one other panelist denounced this statement. There were two more who were part of the panel, and were seen to be just listening to the statements made by Tamilan Prasanna and not asking him to stop.
It is noteworthy that both Nirmala Sitharaman and S Jaishankar are Rajya Sabha members and it gives them equal rights to become cabinet ministers. Additionally, one must remember that former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was a Rajya Sabha MP himself and yet he was the Prime Minister of the country for 10 long years. Singh was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1991 by the Assam state legislature. He secured re-election in 1995, 2001, 2007, and again in 2013.
