DMK Scion Udhayanidhi Stalin Launches Trek Tamil Nadu Portal, Trek To Velliangiri Costs More Than Chennai To Goa Or Chennai To Mumbai Flight

The ruling DMK government has come up with a new initiative called the ‘Trek Tamil Nadu scheme,’ with designated routes and a fee structure announced by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on 26 October 2024. However, the announcement sparked controversy due to the high fees particularly on Velliangiri hills and other treks, which are reportedly more expensive than flights from Chennai to Goa or Chennai to Mumbai. This outrage is because the area has been more recognized as a pilgrimage site rather than a trekking destination, Siddhar worship precedence.

About Velliangiri Hills

Velliangiri Hills, located in the Western Ghats near Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, holds deep spiritual significance for Hindus and is often called the “Kailash of the South.” Known for its challenging terrain and breathtaking landscapes, Velliangiri is considered a sacred place, where ancient sages and devotees have meditated for centuries. The hills are particularly revered as the site where Lord Shiva is believed to have performed his cosmic dance, making it a pilgrimage destination for Shiva devotees.

Significance For Hindus

One of the most important aspects of the Velliangiri pilgrimage is the trek to the seventh hill, where a natural rock formation symbolizes Lord Shiva. Pilgrims hike up the steep and rocky paths, often barefoot, enduring the rugged conditions as an act of devotion. The journey up these seven hills is seen as a means of personal transformation and spiritual awakening, reflecting the core Hindu belief that physical hardship and dedication lead to spiritual growth.

Thousands of devotees climb these hills each year, especially during Maha Shivaratri, searching for blessings, purification, and a connection to the divine. The hills are also enveloped in local folklore and legend, enhancing their mystique and attracting spiritual seekers across India. Velliangiri is celebrated for its religious significance, spiritual atmosphere, and natural beauty, making it a cherished place in Tamil Nadu’s cultural and religious landscape.
