DMK man practicing usury arrested for intimidating daily wage worker and driving him to suicide

A DMK officer bearer who had lent loans at usurious rates to a daily wage worker and later intimidated him for non-payment has been arrested.

Kalaimani, belonging to Kumarapalayam near Namakkal had taken a loan from DMK man and money lender Boopathi for his son Kaviyarasu’s studies who is pursuing his fourth year at Chidambaram Medical College.

Even though the interest rates were high, Kalaimani agreed to the terms and conditions of the loan to help his son pursue his studies. Though he was struggling to make ends meet, he made payments on time. However, he has been unable to make the interest payment with no income coming in due to the lockdown imposed due to the Chinese virus pandemic.

Enraged over the non-payment, the DMK office bearer intimidated and humiliated Kalaimani in the presence of everyone who then drank poison.

His relatives later took Kalaimani to a hospital. Following this, the police arrested the DMK man Boopathy and a case was registered for abetment to suicide (Section 306 of IPC).
