Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president MK Stalin on Thursday reiterated his party’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of minority communities, accusing the Union government of targeting them through divisive legislation.

He also launched a sharp critique against the central government on Wednesday, pledging his party’s strong opposition to the Constitution Bill 2025 that was introduced in parliament by Union Home Minister Amit Shah; he called it a “black law” that he alleges is designed to stifle dissent and move the country towards dictatorship.

Stalin made these remarks while speaking at the book launch ceremony of late DMK leader and former minister, Rahman Khan, in Chennai. The event, which also saw the presence of party leaders including Udhayanidhi Stalin, was used by the Chief Minister to pay rich tributes to Khan’s legacy and, significantly, to reiterate the DMK’s steadfast commitment to protecting minority communities.

In his speech, Stalin fondly remembered Rahman Khan as a “star speaker” whose voice “echoed like thunder in the Legislative Assembly.” He chronicled Khan’s long-standing commitment to the party’s principles, even in the face of personal threats, framing him as an ideal DMK cadre.

This tribute seamlessly transitioned into a stark political warning. Stalin referred to the bill recently introduced in Parliament, which he termed a “black law.”

“Yesterday, in Parliament, a black law has been brought to remove those who oppose them (the government) by using intelligence agencies,” Stalin stated, ostensibly referring to the recently introduced Constitution Bill 2025 legislation that allegedly could target opposition leaders. He directly addressed the Union Home Minister, drawing a parallel with previous controversial laws.

“Before this, they brought various laws against the minorities like the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and Waqf Amendment Act. Just as we strongly opposed these laws on behalf of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, we will also oppose this black law,” he declared to applause.

The Chief Minister questioned the intent behind these legislative moves, accusing the ruling BJP at the center of diverting public attention from pressing issues.

“Why are they doing all this? They are diverting people from their problems… They are doing it to divert the country from the path of democracy,” Stalin asserted.

Linking the party’s past actions to its present resolve, Stalin used the occasion to send a clear message of support to minority communities. He expressed confidence that the current generation of DMK leaders would continue to stand by them.

“I say with confidence that we will always stand by the minority people like DMK is, and that DMK is here for you, for this community, especially for the minority community,” he said, assuring that the party founded on the principles of social justice would remain their steadfast ally.

Stalin released 5 books written by former Minister A. Rahman Khan at the Kalaignar Arangam in Teynampet, Chennai. He released the books: Journey of Justice, Silently Sleeping Snowdrops, Taj Mahals of the World, Autumn Blooming Flowers, and Stars Unseen by the Sky.
