A senior functionary of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu has been accused of a horrific cycle of sexual assault, blackmail, and death threats, leading to a registered FIR and a manhunt by the police.
The accused, Thiruvakkarai Baskaran, who holds the position of Villupuram Central District DMK Union Secretary, is currently absconding after a case was filed against him at the Kottakuppam All Women Police Station.
The complainant, Vijayalakshmi (35), a resident of Thiruvakkarai village in Vanur taluk, outlined a harrowing six-month ordeal in her official complaint. According to her, she was first introduced to Baskaran, a former panchayat president, when she sought his assistance in purchasing construction materials to build a house.
Exploiting this connection, Baskaran allegedly began to harass her. The complaint details that he sexually assaulted her by issuing threats. In a deeply disturbing escalation, he is accused of videotaping the assault and using the recording as leverage to blackmail and threaten her repeatedly over the following months.
In her heart-wrenching complaint, the victim stated, “I am married for 15 years and have a son. I was building a small house and went to seek help from a leader. He introduced me to functionary Bhaskaran. He came to me and, misbehaving, forced himself on me and ruined my life. He took advantage of the fact that my husband is not with me and I live alone.”
The victim further alleged that the DMK functionary recorded a video of the assault and used it to blackmail and threaten her repeatedly for six months. “For the past six months, he has taken a video and kept it. He assaulted me again, and again, and again. He threatened that if I did not comply, he would leak the video publicly,” she recounted.
The opposition parties, the AIADMK and the BJP, have launched a fierce attack on the MK Stalin-led DMK government, accusing it of shielding criminals within its ranks.
The AIADMK staged protests in Villupuram, demanding immediate action and justice for the victim. Meanwhile, the BJP slammed the government’s “failure” to protect women.
