Three members of a family were injured in a sickle attack allegedly carried out by the son of a DMK councillor in Mayiladuthurai district, police said.
As reported in Tamil Hindu, the incident took place at Arupathumuvarpettai in South Street, where Selvam, a bank jewellery appraiser employed in Kumbakonam, lives with his family. According to preliminary information, Selvam’s wife Karpagam was collecting water from a public drinking water tap when she was allegedly attacked by Ashok, the son of DMK councillor Jayalakshmi Murugan, following a dispute between the two families.
When Selvam attempted to intervene and prevent the attack, he too sustained injuries. Their 14-year-old son, Kaviyarasan, was also injured while trying to protect his parents.
All three were rushed to the Mayiladuthurai Government Hospital for treatment. Due to the severity of her injuries, Karpagam was later referred to the Thanjavur Government Medical College Hospital for advanced medical care.
Following the incident, Ashok surrendered before the Mayiladuthurai police. However, he reportedly claimed that members of Selvam’s family had attacked him with a knife. Police subsequently admitted him to the Mayiladuthurai Government Hospital for treatment.
It is reported that there had been frequent disputes between the two neighbouring families, particularly while collecting water from the public tap. Investigators suspect the latest confrontation may have escalated from those earlier quarrels.
The Mayiladuthurai police have launched an investigation to ascertain the sequence of events and determine the circumstances that led to the attack.
