DMK cadres try to grab land near Chennai, public thrash and send them running helter-skelter

Men belonging to the DMK who had tried to sell off poromboke land meant for public use on the outskirts of Chennai were thrashed and sent running by people of the area.

Around 2000 families live in a settlement near Kallu Kuttai which lies next to Taramani, a suburb of Chennai. In 2015, a water tank was erected on a poromboke land for the use of people of the area.

After the DMK came to power in May 2021, a few men from the DMK had been frequenting the place allegedly trying to sell off the poromboke land using fake documents and demanded for the removal of the water tank meant for public use.

When they were confronted by the people a few days back, the DMK cadres identified as Ramesh Manikandan, Rajalingam and Sakthi threatened the people that they would demolish their houses with a JCB. They allegedly gave death threats and made derogatory comments on women who had opposed them saying that the DMK was now in power and that they can do whatever they want.

Irked by the behaviour of the DMK men, the public put up a united front and thrashed DMK men Ramesh Manikandan and Rajalingam and sent them running.

Along with them the DMK circle secretary Venkatesan, treasurer Kathir and advocate Ramesh Mani who were involved in selling off poromboke land to gullible poor people promising to build huts were also beaten up by the public. The police who were informed of the clash arrived at the spot to ease the situation but were of no help.

Based on the complaints of the residents, the Thoraipakkam police have registered a case and are investigating the issue.
