Tamilaga Vazhvumurai Katchi (TVK) leader and Panruti MLA T Velmurugan has stirred controversy with comments seen as moral policing and character assassination, directed at a female student during what was meant to be criticism of actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) founder Vijay.
The incident occurred during an event in Mahabalipuram, where Vijay hosted a felicitation ceremony on 4 June 2025 for Class 10 and 12 toppers. Held at a private hall, the event saw emotional moments between students and the actor, with several greeting him warmly some students even hugged and kissed him out of admiration. These moments, widely shared on social media, were largely seen by fans as heartfelt displays of affection.
However, Velmurugan, while speaking at a public meeting in Salem, harshly criticized the event targeting the behavior of the students and attacking their families. He questioned whether it was part of Tamil culture for young female students to hug and kiss film stars, and whether such behavior was appropriate when done publicly, especially in the presence of parents, journalists and media.
Velmurugan said, “Today, someone acted in two films and after becoming a superstar says, ‘I am the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.’ As soon as he gives a 2-gram gift, our fool… I won’t blame the actor. He’s taking along a matured girl… She who has just finished her Plus Two and in three months going to complete college. He is taking along college girls… Doesn’t a Tamil have any common sense? That girl, who was born, raised, and brought up—who tomorrow has to live as someone’s wife—right in front of her father and mother, in front of thousands of media people and journalists, you’re allowing her to hug and kiss a cinema performer… What kind of lowly birth is this? Is this the birth of a Tamilian? She says ‘Vijay Anna’… Vijay has acted? Appreciate it. Praise Ajith, praise Rajini, praise Sharath… Praise our patchai Tamilian Sathyaraj. But how can parents allow this kind of behavior? Is this Tamil society? Is this Tamil tradition? Is this the land where the brave clan of Tamil women lived? And we say this is Tamil soil?”

His comments, targeting specific female student and her parents, quickly drew backlash on social media. Critics accused Velmurugan of resorting to regressive thinking, publicly shaming a student, and crossing a line under the guise of cultural criticism, with many calling Velmurugan’s remarks demeaning and demanding accountability for his statements.
