DMDK Joins DMK Alliance After Two Decades, Seals Deal Ahead Of 2026 TN Assembly Polls

Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) general secretary Premallatha Vijayakant met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin at the DMK headquarters in Chennai and confirmed that the DMDK would be joining the DMK-led alliance ahead of the upcoming Tamil Nadu elections. This marks the first time since the party’s founding in 2005 that the DMDK has aligned with the DMK.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Premallatha stated that seat-sharing arrangements would be finalised through discussions with a committee to be constituted by the DMK to hold talks with alliance partners.

Welcoming the DMDK into the alliance, Stalin said the party’s entry would strengthen prospects for the continuation of DMK rule in the state. He expressed confidence that the alliance would work together for Tamil Nadu’s overall development and future growth.

Premallatha indicated that the DMDK was likely to be allotted a Rajya Sabha seat, adding that a formal announcement on the matter would be made by Stalin. She said the decision to join the DMK alliance reflected the wishes of a majority of DMDK functionaries. Recalling political developments prior to the 2016 Assembly election, she noted that an alliance with the DMK had been considered earlier but had materialised only now, a decade later and after the demise of party founder Vijayakanth.

In the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly election, the DMDK had contested as part of the AMMK alliance but failed to win any seats. The party also drew a blank in the 2024 Lok Sabha election while contesting in alliance with the AIADMK.
