The Sterlite plant in Thoothukudi started the production and supply of oxygen, from Wednesday (12 May), bringing relief to doctors and patients in 7 to 8 districts of south Tamil Nadu.
In the first phase of producing and supplying oxygen to hospitals in Tamil Nadu, about 5 tonnes of oxygen produced from Vedanta’s Sterlite Copper Plant in Thoothukudi was brought to the Government Hospital at Thoothukudi on Thursday.
But a small defect was detected in the oxygen plant due to several months of not being in function. This had disrupted supply of oxygen for a few days.
However, Vedanta has issued a statement on May 19 that the disruption in the oxygen plant has been rectified, and have now restarted production.
The oxygen generated is being stored at onsite facilities and will be distributed as per the directions of the State government and concerned nodal officers.
