In a shocking incident, a priest was severely injured after being attacked with a sickle by a local man in Bhagavathipuram, Thiruverumbur, Trichy district. The assault occurred following a dispute over parking near the Vinayagar Temple, and police are currently on the lookout for the suspect.
Satish Kumar, 34, an auto driver by profession and a priest at both the Bhagavathiyamman and Vinayagar Temples, had raised concerns about Sadiq Basha, 41, an auto driver and a Communist Party of India-Marxist executive, who regularly parked his car at the entrance of the Vinayagar Temple causing inconvenience to devotees and disrupting worship. The priest had warned Basha that with the Thaipusam festival approaching, more devotees would be visiting the temple and the vehicle if parked there could cause further disruptions.
To address the situation, Satish Kumar went to Basha’s house and spoke to his wife, Saira Banu, informing her that her husband should move his car. When Basha returned home, his wife relayed the message to him.
Enraged by the conversation, Basha confronted Satish Kumar the following morning at the Vinayagar Temple. A violent argument ensued, with Badshah chasing the priest and forcing him to run away. He then cornered Satish Kumar at the Bhagavathyamman Temple gate, where he attacked him with a sickle, inflicting severe injuries to his neck, back, and hands.
The priest was rushed to the Trichy Government Hospital in critical condition, where he is receiving treatment. The Thiruverumbur police have registered a case following the priest’s complaint and are actively searching for Sadiq Badshah, who is absconding.
