Controversial Liver “Specialist” Dr. Abby Philips And Leftist Media Like TNM, The South First Peddle Misinfo About NMC Logo

Controversial liver “specialist” Dr Abby Philips whose X account was withheld over a defamation suit (to be reinstated later) has made it to the mainstream news once again. This time while badmouthing Ayurveda and Hindu gods, he has also spread fake news.

What Is The Issue?

The National Medical Commission updated its logo recently. The modifications include – the substitution of the word “India” with “Bharat” and incorporating a coloured image of Dhanwantari, the Hindu deity associated with healing and medicine. As this logo made it to the news, secular and left-liberal physicians started seeing red with Dr Abby Philips at the forefront.

He shared an X post which said, “The National Medical Commision of India, the apex “scientific” body that regulates medical education and medical professionals has silently dropped the Ashoka State Emblem from it’s logo, replacing it with an image of the Hindu God Dhanvantri, the embodiment of pseudoscientific Ayurveda, thus signaling the shameless entry of India into the inner circle of pseudoscience Hell. If the NMC Members in charge of this abomination has some shame, they’ll change the logo to a more secular one…one that does not embrace pseudoscientific beliefs, driven by religion and faith, but by science and rationality. Some shame at least.”

While demeaning Ayurveda as a pseudoscience, he has also insulted Dhanwantari Bhagawan in the process.

Is His Claim Correct?

Philips said the 4-lion Ashoka Emblem was dropped from the original logo and replaced with that of Dhanwantari. However, BN Gangadhar, the officiating chairman of the NMC rubbished these claims when speaking to Hindustan Times. He said, “There is nothing to sensationalise here as nothing has been significantly changed. The image of Dhanwantari was already in the logo but in the form of a black-and-white line diagram. All members unanimously decided that colour should be added to the image as black and white image was not printable. When NMC was formed, it was decided then to use Dhanwantari’s image in the logo. Apollo is the god of healing in some other country and Dhanwantari is the god of health and healing in India.”

Ironically, the Hindustan Times also quoted Philips’s X post in their article.

A netizen also confirmed the comments made by BN Gangadhar that the logo originally had a black and white version of Dhanwantari while it has now been replaced by a coloured image. A simple investigation using WayBackMachine which contains information from the archives proved that what Philips said was false information. The changes made include:

  • Replacing b/w image of Dhanwantari with a coloured one
  • India replaced by Bharat
  • Bharatiya in the logo replaced by Bharat

So @theliverdr has again spread fake news that the National Commission of India has changed its logo and he has utterly used bad words.

In reality, the logo was always there, it has just coloured an image of Bhagavan Dhanvantari.

Dr. Abby Philips was recently found to be targeting a netizen named Vijay Gajera and exposed his private information on social media platform X in the name of sharing pictures of his FIR.

Dear friends, I am sorry that this is not an educational and medical science post which I usually do. This is a bit long, and personal, so please bear with me, stay with me.

There are some matters that require me speaking out without fear or prejudice.

Last night until today… pic.twitter.com/nLleVeKWDW

How News Media Peddled The Fake News

Many news media like South First  and The News Minute wrote elaborate articles based on Philips’ tweet that contained wrong information. It has been proved that what the liver “specialist” shared was fake information. South First continues to have the same content at the time this article was written, The News Minute edited the content with an error message at the end saying, “Editor’s note- The previous version of this story said that the color image of the deity had replaced the national emblem. We regret the error.”

This goes on to show how such fake news peddlers are abled by the media fraternity in amplifying misinformation. It is noteworthy that The News Minute ran a detailed article profiling Philips around the time of the Himalaya Wellness defamation case. Philips continues to give interviews to leftist media like The Print and still persists in spreading misinformation about Ayurveda, demonising the indic knowledge system and by fear-mongering about the supposed side effects of the medicinal system. Philips works at Rajagiri Hospital which belongs to the CMI group – Carmelites of Mary Immaculate, a missionary group.
