Congress (UDF) Decides To Not Raise Controversial Remarks Made By CPIM Speaker Shamseer On Lord Ganesha In Kerala Assembly

The Congress-led UDF in Kerala has decided it will not raise the issue of Speaker Shamseer’s controversial remarks on Lord Ganesha in the Assembly. The Kerala Assembly session began on 7 August 2023.

Janam TV reports that the Congress believes that if the “myth” issue is discussed in the Assembly, Congress will create an impression that Shamseer, who belongs to the Muslim community, is being subjected to a witch hunt. They reported that the Congress fears that this will alienate the Muslim community from the party and will be reflected in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Janam TV reports that the Congress in Kerala feels that the protest against Shamseer on this issue will be a way for the Left Front to mobilise Muslim votes and that is probably the reason why they have decided that the issue should not be discussed in the Assembly.

Kerala Assembly Speaker had allegedly made controversial remarks about Lord Ganesha at a school function in July 2023. Neither his party nor the Speaker himself volunteered to rephrase or retrack the remarks made. The Nair Service Society and many Hindu organisations conducted Nama Japa yatra in Kerala. However, the ruling CPI-M government filed police cases on the participants.
