This is not an isolated incident. The rise of rowdyism, attacks, lootings, and gang rivalries has been steadily increasing across the state. The lack of stringent action or proper follow-up on such cases, along with overlooked arrests, has contributed to the state’s growing law and order issues.
Robbery Spree At Night In Chennai
A shocking robbery spree unfolded on 2 December 2024 in Chennai when a gang of four attacked Akash, a 25-year-old IT employee from Sholinganallur, and his friend Janakar, 28, as they returned home after dining. The gang, travelling in an autorickshaw, surrounded the duo, brutally assaulting Akash with knives and sticks, inflicting severe injuries on his head, ear, and knee. They robbed him of his OnePlus phone and ₹2,000 before fleeing.
The spree continued as the gang intercepted an online food delivery worker, robbing him at knifepoint. They went on to target multiple victims across various locations, including Kelambakkam, where they snatched another phone. Despite their attempts to evade capture, the Chemmancherry Police, led by Inspector Gladson Jose, tracked the gang through the night and apprehended them in Mangadu after a confrontation.
The suspects—Sharif (24), Abbas Sharif (22), Abdul Razak, and a juvenile—were found to be deeply involved in criminal activities. Police revealed that Sharif, posing as a food delivery worker, was a ganja seller who led the gang in a series of robberies to fund their extravagant lifestyle. Earlier crimes included robbing a pedestrian in Pallavaram and an auto driver outside a medical shop. The gang’s actions reflected a descent into lawlessness fueled by substance abuse and financial desperation.
