A 54-year-old migrant worker from West Bengal was allegedly beaten to death by four people, including a minor, after he refused to give them cigarettes at Nolambur on Saturday night. Police said the accused were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, as reported in The New Indian Express.
The deceased was identified as Abhijeeth, who was working at a construction site in Nolambur.
Police identified the accused as Vaseegaran (20), Sabari (19), Ajay (18) and a 17-year-old boy who had dropped out of school a few years ago. The three adults were unemployed.
According to police, the four approached Abhijeeth around 10 pm while he was standing outside the construction site and asked him for cigarettes. When he refused, an argument broke out, following which the accused allegedly assaulted him.
Other workers at the site rushed out after hearing Abhijeeth’s screams. The assailants then fled the spot.
Abhijeeth was taken to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Nolambur police registered a case and sent the body to the Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Police apprehended all four accused on Sunday morning. Vaseegaran, Sabari and Ajay were subsequently remanded in judicial custody. The minor was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board and sent to a government observation home.
