Case Filed Against Parithabangal For Satirical Video On Casteism In Tamil Nadu

parithabangal case honour killing casteism tamil nadu

A police complaint has been lodged against popular YouTube content creators Gopi and Sudhakar, known collectively as Parithabangal, for their recent video addressing caste-based social issues in the wake of “honour killing” of a Scheduled Caste youth in Tirunelveli.

The complaint, filed by an advocate named Dhanushkodi at the Coimbatore City Police Commissioner’s Office, alleges that the satirical video titled “Society Paavangal” contains material that is offensive to certain communities and promotes disharmony.

The complainant has accused the creators of making derogatory references to “two specific communities” and claimed the content incites hatred and defames social groups. Police confirmed receipt of the complaint and said it was under preliminary review. No FIR has been filed as of Thursday evening.

What Is The Video About?

The video, uploaded to the Parithabangal YouTube channel, is a 15-minute social satire that critiques caste pride, discrimination, and community-based groupism, particularly among youth. Through a series of dialogues and dramatized scenes, the creators portray how misguided notions of “heritage,” “pride,” and “belonging” linked to caste identity can derail lives, glorify violence, and perpetuate social stagnation.

The video follows a protagonist who has been “induced” to wake up the casteist feelings within and is allegedly shown to be of Thevar or Gounder caste – identified by his clothes, forehead markings and wristband. There are instances where the main character played by Sudhakar is shown telling his community people to “identify” brethren with their wrist bands.

The other character played by Gopi attempts to pull him back from these evils. Sudhakar again is shown flexing and wielding the sickle as is seen with specific communities in TN.

There is also a scene where a recent viral social media video proclaiming caste pride is recreated. In the video that made its rounds on social media, people from a specific caste were seen flexing it on their car on a highway.

As Gopi attempts to prevent his friends from yielding to peer pressure and emotional manipulation from members of their group, they pull him back, leading to tragic consequences – all this in a satirical way. The video ends with a reflection on how caste-based groupism has ruined multiple young lives, including those with the potential for athletic and academic success.

The creators have not yet released an official statement, but the video continues to circulate widely on social media. The video has also drawn criticism from some quarters who see it as generalizing or misrepresenting caste identities.

It is noteworthy that the same duo was in trouble for their derogatory take on the Tirupati laddu adulteration issue.
