A case of attempted murder has been registered after a 15-year-old girl was allegedly targeted by a car bearing a DMK flag in Virudhunagar district. A video of the incident has since gone viral, triggering political reactions and prompting a police search for the accused.
The incident occurred near Narikudi in Virudhunagar district. According to the police complaint, Dharani, the 15-year-old daughter of Karunanidhi, a resident of Vandavasi village, was walking home after grazing goats when a car carrying four men allegedly sped towards her in an attempt to run her over.
The girl reportedly managed to move out of the vehicle’s path at the last moment, causing the driver to lose control. The car veered off the road and entered a nearby field.
Hearing the commotion, Karunanidhi and other villagers confronted the occupants of the vehicle. According to the complaint, the men got out of the car, picked up wooden sticks from the roadside, threatened those present, and attempted to assault them before fleeing the spot as more local residents gathered.
Videos recorded by bystanders during the confrontation have been widely circulated on social media.
Temple Tax Dispute Allegedly Behind Attack
In his complaint to the police, Karunanidhi alleged that the attack was orchestrated by the son of a man identified as Kundumalai, with whose family they have had a long-standing dispute over temple tax payments in the village, as reported in Tamil ABPLive.
Based on the complaint, the A. Mukkulam Police registered a case under various provisions, including attempt to murder and criminal intimidation, and launched a search for the absconding accused.
BJP Slams Law And Order Situation
The incident also drew a political response from Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthran, who condemned the alleged attack and criticised the state’s law and order situation.
In a statement, Nagenthran said the incident reflected a deterioration in public safety, alleging that people were being threatened, assaulted, and even subjected to attempted murder in broad daylight. He also criticised the Joseph Vijay-led government and demanded strict action against those responsible without any compromise.
The police investigation is currently underway.
