Canal goes missing in Dindigul dist after DMK’s rise to power

Farmers have lodged a complaint at the police station in Vedasandur in Dindigul district, alleging that a canal that had been set aside and maintained at a cost of ₹60 lakh rupees has disappeared within two months of the DMK coming to power.

Venkatraman Iyengar Dam is located across the Kiriyampatti River near Vedasandur. The irrigation canal leading from here was desilted for 3 kms under the AIADMK regime last year at a cost of ₹25 lakh rupees under the Kudimaramatthu scheme.

However, farmers have complained that the location of the irrigation canal has gone unnoticed as a private spinning mill near Kottaiyur has encroached and levelled the canal.

Similarly, they allege that the left irrigation canal leading from the Lakshmanampatti dam was desilted last year at a cost of ₹35 lakh rupees, but now houses have been built encroaching and levelling the irrigation canal in Ayyanar town.

Farmers have complained that officials from the PWD and Water Resources department have not taken any action despite multiple complaints raised in the last two months and hence the farmers have now registered a police complaint.
