India is all set to unveil six bridges constructed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in Jammu & Kashmir critical to our army, the FinancialExpress reported
Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will unveil four bridges in Akhnoor sector and two in Jammu-Rajpura area constructed at a cost of ₹45 crore. “All bridges are around 300 to 100 metres approximately,” a senior Defence Ministry officer was quoted saying.
The present government at the Centre has been developing its long-neglected border infrastructure to help in the development of border villages and also for ready mobilization of troops.
The Ministry of Defence in a statement said, “Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reviewed the ongoing projects with DG BRO (Border Roads Organisation) and other senior officials at a meeting in South Block Thursday (9 July)”.
BRO has been on the forefront in the building of roads, bridges, tunnels and airfields in remote border areas and has also undertaken construction in friendly foreign countries like Bhutan, Myanmar, and Afghanistan in line with India’s overall strategic objectives.
BRO Director General Lieutenant General Harpal Singh has also briefed the Defence Minister on the progress of the under-construction 8.8-km-long Atal Rohtang Tunnel that is set for a September opening.
In June 2020, the government had approved an additional ₹1,691 crore for highway works by the BRO in Jammu & Kashmir and Uttarakhand which is critical for swift troop movement along the frontlines.
