Bold Daylight Attack: Panchayat Union Vice-Chairman Assassinated On Vandalur Flyover Highlights Deteriorating L&O Situation In TN

In a bold cinematic-style assault, a group of individuals launched a daring attack on the vice chairman of Kattankulathur Panchayat Union on 29 February 2024, utilizing country bombs and relentlessly pursuing and assaulting him in broad daylight. This incident, the most recent in a string of such murders in the southern region of the capital city, unfolded on the Vandalur flyover, causing other motorists to hastily seek shelter in fear.

The victim, Aramudhan (60) from Vandalur, served as the DMK’s Kattankulathur union secretary and had previously held the position of president of Vandalur village panchayat three times. At the time of the attack, he was serving as the vice president of Kattankulathur Panchayat Union.

Preparations were underway for the inauguration of a bus stop on the Vandalur-Walajabad road, scheduled to coincide with the birthday of the DMK party chief and Chief Minister MK Stalin. Around 7 pm, as Aramudhan was en route in his car to inspect the arrangements for the bus stop opening, a group of assailants on three motorcycles intercepted his vehicle on the Vandalur flyover and launched country bombs.

Realizing the imminent threat to his life, Aramudhan promptly exited his vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. However, the assailants pursued and brutally attacked him, severing his left hand and inflicting serious injuries to his head and face. The attackers fled the scene, leaving bystanders in shock.

Concerned citizens rushed Aramudhan to a nearby private hospital, from where he was subsequently referred to Chromepet GH. Unfortunately, he was declared dead on arrival by the doctors. The Vandalur Otteri police have initiated a case, and a manhunt is underway to apprehend the perpetrators. Additional police personnel have been deployed in Vandalur, Otteri, and Manimangalam areas to prevent any potential untoward incidents.

This incident echoes a similar pattern of violence, the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, with the son of a woman panchayat president being murdered on 22 October 2023, and the president of Madambakkam panchayat meeting a similar fate in November 2022, both cases involving the hurling of country bombs followed by fatal hacking attacks.
