BJP national secretary Ma Venkatesan has urged the Tamil Nadu Police not to grant permission for events proposed to mark the death anniversary of Imam Ali, whom he called out as a terrorist involved in multiple bomb blast cases in the state, as reported in Dinamalar.
In a statement, Venkatesan alleged that Thada Rahim and members of his organisation had circulated a post titled “Imam Ali Who Fought Against Injustice” in connection with the proposed commemorative events.
Venkatesan stated that Imam Ali was the mastermind behind the bomb blasts at the RSS office in Chetpet, Chennai, and the Hindu Munnani office in Chindatripet. He further stated that Imam Ali had plotted to assassinate Hindu Munnani founder Rama Gopalan.
According to Venkatesan, Imam Ali was later arrested and, on 7 March 2002, was being taken under police escort for a court hearing when a group of alleged terrorists attacked the police near Thirumangalam in Madurai with country-made bombs, enabling him to escape. The attackers also allegedly took away a police firearm.
Venkatesan further stated that Tamil Nadu Police subsequently shot dead five alleged terrorists, including Imam Ali, in Bengaluru.
He also wrote that a letter recovered from Imam Ali’s room mentioned plans to carry out a bomb attack at the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai.
Venkatesan stated that events to mark Imam Ali’s death anniversary had been planned at several locations across Tamil Nadu for the day after tomorrow. He urged the Tamil Nadu Government and Police not to grant permission for such programmes.
