BJP leader and former Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai on 17 July 2025 raised alarm over a disturbing incident in Tiruppur district, where individuals allegedly under the influence of ganja/ narcotics were seen chasing school students with a sickle.
Sharing the video footage on his X account, Annamalai stated the incident occurred on the road connecting Kunnathur and Perumanallur near Avinashi. The video, which has since gone viral, appears to show a group of men wielding weapons and threatening government school students, triggering fear and panic.
Annamalai wrote, “In Tiruppur district, near Avinashi, on the road connecting Kunnathur and Perumanallur, a shocking video shows individuals under the influence of ganja causing a disturbance with government school students and chasing them with a sickle to attack them. Due to the increasing circulation of narcotic substances, law and order have been disrupted across Tamil Nadu, and it is shameful that the state is now in a deplorable situation where the lives of school-going children are at risk. I urge the DMK government to immediately arrest the anti-social elements who attempted to attack the students and to intensify police patrolling to monitor and prevent issues caused by individuals under the influence in public places. In particular, strict measures must be taken to curb the circulation of narcotic substances near schools and colleges.”

The Tamil Nadu police have yet to issue a formal response on the video or any arrests related to the incident. Meanwhile, public concerns are growing over the safety of students and the increasing visibility of drug-related offenses in the state.
It is noteworthy that about two weeks ago, the Tiruppur Prohibition Police arrested a 22-year-old man for possessing 1.2 kilograms of ganja near a TASMAC shop in Karungalmedu, Kunnathur. Acting on a tip-off, police found him carrying the contraband in a plastic bag. He was later remanded to Tiruppur District Jail after being produced in court.
