In a concerning event in Cuddalore district, a whistleblower who alerted the police about the rampant sale of counterfeit liquor in his vicinity faced threats and was forced to flee for safety. He claimed that the police had allegedly disclosed his identity and contact details, putting his life at risk.
It’s alleged that the police betrayed Jesudas, who reported the illegal sale of liquor near Srimushnam village in Cuddalore district, by giving his information to the liquor-selling gang. The illicit liquor trade operates around the clock in Ramapuram village. Jesudas, the informant, faced threats to his life from the sellers after they obtained his phone number through the police. Terrified, Jesudas sought refuge in the forests nearby.
In his distress, he contacted the police control room “100”, accusing the Srimushnam police of collusion with the counterfeit liquor gangs. He pleaded for help, fearing for his life, and disclosed his location. Jesudas recounted his ordeal, stating that despite his efforts to report the illegal activity, the police’s actions put his life in jeopardy. He lamented his situation, expressing his desperation for assistance as he hid in fear for his safety.
Jesudas provided audio evidence detailing his plight. He narrated how he had been running from danger since morning and expressed disbelief at the police’s betrayal. Jesudas shared the chilling threats he received from the liquor sellers, who were actively seeking him out for retribution. Jesudas said, “I’ve made three calls from the morning, sir. I’ve made a complaint asking to connect the (police) station that someone is selling liquor illegally. Instead what did was, they gave my number to liquor sellers and informed them that I had made the complaint. Now they are confronting me about it, the police called us from Srimushnam station and gave us your number. Did you call and tell them? I will hack you to death. They are searching for me now, I am now hiding in a grove sitting with fear.” He subsequently conveyed all his current whereabouts to the emergency operator, while expressing doubt about sharing this information with the same police station. He lamented that they were the primary cause of his need to hide.
In the same district, a journalist had recorded video evidence of illegal alcohol sales and reported to the police. He was brutally assaulted by the illegal liquor-selling gang. In Kadoor village of Cuddalore district, an incident on Mahavir Jayanti saw the illegal sale of alcohol, prompting journalist Velan to record footage of the illicit activity. However, he found himself embroiled in a dispute with the illegal liquor sales gang. Despite notifying the police, Velan was later attacked by the gang while riding a two-wheeler near Kazhudur. He sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Veppur Government Hospital. The community is critical of the police’s inaction in preventing illegal liquor sales and is demanding both an end to such activities and the arrest of those responsible for attacking the journalist.
