- Nethra, the 13 year old daughter of C. Mohan who runs a saloon in Madurai has been appointed as ‘Goodwill Ambassador to the Poor’ for the United Nations Association for Development and Peace (UNADAP).
The office of UNADAP said that Nethra will be given the opportunity to speak at the United Nations conferences in New York and in Geneva addressing Civil Society forums and conferences.
“This position would give her an opportunity and responsibility to speak to world leaders, academics, politicians and civilians, encouraging them to reach out to the poorest of the poor,” UNADAP said.
Nethra who is now in her 8th standard will also be receiving the Dixon Scholarship worth ₹1 lakh.
Mohan and his family are originally from Ramanathapuram and had moved to Madurai 20 years ago and set up his saloon in the city.
Nethra had urged her father Mohan to help those in distress during lockdown. He had dipped into the ₹5 lakhs that he had kept for his daughter’s studies. He used that money to donate essentials to around 600 families when he himself had no income during that period. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had mentioned about Mohan’s gesture in his radio address Man Ki Baat on May 31.
