Mushaal Hussein Mullick, the Pakistani wife of jailed terrorist and “leader” Yasin Malik, recently sent a letter to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, urging him to advocate for her husband’s case in Parliament. Dated 6 November 2024, the letter appeals to Gandhi to initiate a debate on Malik’s situation, framing it as an opportunity to promote “peace in Jammu and Kashmir.” Maik, who leads the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), has been convicted on terrorism-related charges, with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) seeking the death penalty in a 2022 terror-funding case. Mushaal alleges that Malik is suffering “inhumane treatment” in custody and claims he has embraced non-violence, describing his current hunger strike as a protest against prison conditions.
In her letter, Mushaal emphasizes Malik’s alleged shift from armed struggle to non-violent activism, stating that he could contribute to peace in the region.

It is noteworthy that Mushaal Hussein Mullick in 2023 joined Pakistan’s caretaker cabinet as Special Assistant on Human Rights under PM Anwarul Haq Kakar.
The plea arrives amid ongoing legal proceedings in which the NIA is pushing for capital punishment, underscoring the gravity of the charges he faces, including terror funding and acts that led to the death of four Indian Air Force officers.
Malik was considered a hero for doing that act of terror.
Once upon a time, Yasin Malik was a hero in J&K for killing Indian armed forces, and Kashmiri Hindus and was felicitated by the ex-PM Manmohan Singh but today he is rotting in Jail due to Narendra Modi’s gov.

Congress’s Historical Ties With Malik
The letter has rekindled the links between Congress and such terrorists. Critics argue that Congress has maintained a soft stance towards Malik and other “separatist” figures in the past. Some have pointed to past interactions between Congress leaders and Kashmiri separatist leaders, with critics alleging that such ties have contributed to favorable perceptions of Congress among separatist circles. In 2006, Malik met with then-Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as part of an outreach effort aimed at promoting dialogue in Jammu and Kashmir. Photos of the meeting, which circulated widely, were controversial, especially given Malik’s admitted involvement in violent acts, including the kidnapping of Rubaiya Sayeed, daughter of former home minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, and the killing of Squadron Leader Ravi Khanna.

Congress leaders, including Mani Shankar Aiyar and Digvijaya Singh, have previously made statements that critics argue align with the views of pro-separatist groups, further fueling accusations of political sympathy toward separatists. These allegations have been compounded by endorsements from figures such as Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, who has cited statements from Congress leaders in support of separatist rhetoric.
