Devotees Scramble For Parking Space And Accommodation In Tiruchendur As DMK Members Allegedly Get Preferential Treatment To Witness Soorasamharam Festival

The “Soorasamharam” festival, celebrated by devotees of Lord Murugan across the country, marks the dramatic climax of the battle between the deity and the demon Soorapadman. It depicts Lord Murugan’s victory as he slays Soorapadman and his allies—Anamugan, Panumugan, and Simhamugan—using his divine spear, the Vel, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. This annual event is a central part of the ‘Kanda Sashti’ festival held at the Subramania Swamy Temple in Tiruchendur. Devotees from across the nation, and even from abroad, flock to witness this momentous occasion.

To accommodate the large number of visitors, various arrangements are typically made, such as special buses, trains, and designated parking spaces. However, this year, many devotees are facing significant difficulty in finding parking spaces for their vehicles, despite having already paid or reserved space for the same.

This issue arises from a new directive allegedly issued by a DMK minister. The DMK, allegedly with some of its ministers seeking to promote their political interests, has sent out a special letter requesting that more parking spaces be allocated for their VIPs, leading to widespread distress among devotees. This move has caused significant disruption, as those who had made prior parking arrangements are now unable to park, exacerbating an already challenging situation. This latest move by the ruling party has deeply angered and displeased the devotees who visited the temple for this special occasion.

The devotees further expressed their distress, lamenting that none were allocated to them despite having paid for rooms. Instead, the rooms were given to the on-duty bandobast officials. With the onset of rain, the devotees were left waiting to have a darshan of Lord Muruga, drenched in the downpour. They also complained about the insufficient bathroom facilities, which they were unable to access.
