A 24-year-old man was hacked to death near the Combined Court Complex in Gopalapuram on Monday (13 February 2023) morning, a day after a person accused in a murder case was hacked and shot to death in Coimbatore.
G. Gokul of Kavundampalayam has been identified as the deceased. According to police, he was involved in a murder in 2021. When he arrived at the court with his friend Manoj (27), a five-member gang assaulted him with machetes, according to police.
The gang attacked the duo on the road leading to the court complex’s back gate while members of the public and lawyers stood nearby. The road was tense as the men chased and assaulted the victims with their weapons. Videos of the assault are being circulated on social media platforms. While four of the assailants walked off with weapons, one man was seen fleeing on a motorcycle. Manoj was admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital while Gokul died on the spot.
According reports, Gokul was one of the suspects in the December 2021 murder of a 22-year-old youth near Saravanampatti in Coimbatore. Gokul and his accomplices chased V. Sriram alias ‘Kurangu’ Sriram, a resident of Sampath Street in Rathinapuri, with weapons in Anjugam Nagar near Chinnavedampatti and hacked him to death after pursuing him on motorcycles for nearly 5 kilometres.
The murder of Gokul on Monday is believed to be retaliation by the opponent gang.
V. Balakrishnan, Commissioner of Coimbatore City Police, told journalists that five special teams have been formed to apprehend the assailants.
R. Sathyapandi (31) of Arapalayam in Madurai, a murder case accused who worked for a realtor in Coimbatore, was hacked and shot by a group of men on Sunday at Uppilipalayam. Around 7 p.m., a group of five men converged on Sathyapandi near a private college on Nava India Road in Pappanaickenpalayam. They hacked and shot Sathyapandi as he ran for his life. He died as a result of two shots and multiple cut injuries.
Tamil Nadu BJP president Annamalai came down heavily on the DMK government for the break down of law and order in the state. He said,” Yesterday alone, two murders occurred in Coimbatore in public and in the court complex. Not only that, but also gun culture has started growing in Tamil Nadu. The state’s law and order has been in shambles since the DMK took power. Murder and robbery have become more common across the state. The police have their hands tied. There is an unsafe situation for the police themselves.”
He added,”The incompetent DMK government has sent all the ministers to the Erode East by-election mission and created an unsafe situation for the lives and property of the people of Tamil Nadu. I urge the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, on behalf of the BJP, to focus on law and order, which is the basic duty of the government, and to take strict measures so that the public can live without fear.”
