The owner of a restaurant in Dindigul has won hearts by leaving food parcels in front of his shop every day and a sign that reads that ‘the poor and the hungry can take it for free.’
Mujibur Rahman and his brother Bilal Hussain run a hotel called Mujib Biryani near the Dindigul bus stand. During last year’s coronavirus lockdown, they helped the starving roadside residents, with the help of volunteers, and provided free food. During the previous lockdown, a total of more than 25,000 food parcels were prepared and distributed by the hotel.
This year, the Tamil Nadu government has declared a curfew with restrictions due to the second wave of coronavirus. As a result, many roadside shopkeepers, including the poor, have been left without access to income. The Mujib Biryani Hotel is currently operating only takeaway since there is only parcel service allowed in restaurants. In this situation, the idea of providing free food to the victims of the curfew came to the Mujib brothers again.
They then set up a table in front of the hotel and put food parcels on it, saying ‘the poor and the hungry can take it for free.’ Those with no means of income, many are aware of his service and take the food packages placed in front of the hotel to eat.
The brothers who run the hotel, Mujibur Rahman and Bilal Hussain, said: “We helped the hungry during the lockdown last year. Many cooperated. Knowing that many people are currently suffering from unemployment and hunger, our hotel has already started a program to satisfy the hungry with our food. People know this and take the food packets they need and go hungry. We put out 150 food parcels a day, evening and night.”
They went on to say that they carry these food packages for free at no cost. The sight of them gratefully picking up food parcels makes them want to help more, they said.
