HR&CE dept withdraws circular inviting ‘applications’ for apointment of ‘Jeeyar’

After facing backlash from Hindus, the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department has withdrawn the notice calling applications for the appointment of ‘Jeeyar’, the religious pontiff of the Vaishnava sampradaya.

On 6th May 2021, the HR&CE department issued a circular calling ‘applications’ for the post of Jeeyar saying that those belonging to the Thengalai sect of Vasihnava sampradaya and well versed in the Vedas, Agamas, Naalayira Divyaprabandham, and other temple traditions and rituals can apply. It said that the applications would be received till 4:00 PM, 8th of June.

Many practicing Hindus especially those of the Vaishnava sampradaya questioned as to why the government was interfering with Hindu traditions and customs alone. They had expressed their anger asking if the government has the guts to appoint the Cardinal or Archbishop of the Church or the Maulvi for a Mosque.

Political leaders like Arjun Sampath of the Indu Makkal Katchi and H. Raja of the BJP had severely criticized the move which came within days after the DMK assuming power.

Following the strong reaction from Hindus, HR&CE Minister Sekar Babu in a press meet a day ago had assured that appropriate action would be taken in consultation with relevant stakeholders.
