Hundreds of packets of ORS powder were found lying abandoned on the roadside near Sivagangai on Tuesday. ORS or the Oral Rehydration Solutions powder is given to people suffering from vomiting, diarrhoea and dehydration. In particular, the Department of Health has advised that ORS powder solution be mandatory for children under the age of 5 who suffer from diarrhoea.
For this, ORS powder packets are provided by the Health Ministry at Anganwadi Centers. Like glucose, it rehydrates and prevents diarrhoea. Also, ORS packets are provided free of cost at government hospitals and primary health centres.
In light of this, hundreds of ORS powder packets were found lying on the roadside near the forest settlement next to Sivagangai. This shows that the Health Ministry officials are wasting ORS packets without providing them to the patients properly.
The Health Ministry should investigate this issue and take action regarding the abandonment of ORS packets on the roadside. With the onset of summer, many people become dehydrated. This has led to a demand for ORS packets to be provided to visitors to hospitals and primary health centres without wastage.
