A tender has been floated by the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) to hire specialists in horticulture and landscape to decorate the medians and provide a green remodelling to the first phase of the metro’s extension corridor in the northern part of the city.
“Plants such as ficus, palm cycas are being considered. Light-loving and shade-loving plant species are being proposed too,” officials were quoted by the New Indian Express. The phase-1 corridor is 9 km long with an elevation of 6.6 km whereas it goes 2.4 km to the underground.
Husk along with coco peat and vermicompost will be combined with the sand in the medians to ensure good health of the plants.
As per the tender, the contractor will have to bear the cost of guaranteeing sufficient water for the plants over the course of the next two years. There are also plans for possible plans for the expansion of other medians too and the possibility of incorporating vertical gardens as the construction of the project nears its completion.
