Is TVK Candidate Srinath A Converted Christian? Did Joseph Vijay Give Thoothukudi Seat Because Of That?

Is TVK Candidate Srinath A Converted Christian? Did Joseph Vijay Give Thoothukudi Seat Because Of That?

TVK’s Thoothukudi decision has triggered a question the party cannot brush aside: was this seat given on political merit, or on personal proximity to Joseph Vijay or has it got to do something with religion? It is reported that Srinath was fielded from Thoothukudi while Ajitha Agnel, a local functionary who had been aspiring for the constituency, was passed over, setting off anger and visible dissent among sections of the party base.

That is not a small issue in a party that claims to represent a new political culture. When a leader launches a party on the promise of clean internal politics, cadre respect, and a break from old-party favoritism, every candidate selection becomes a test of that promise. In Thoothukudi, that test appears to have produced more resentment than confidence.

The Friendship Factor

One of the politically damaging part of this controversy is that the “friendship angle” is not an invention of rivals. Reports repeatedly describe Srinath as Vijay’s long-time and close friend, and that the bond stretches back around 30 years to Vijay’s early film career. Other reports indicate that Vijay introduced Srinath in a way that underscored personal trust and closeness, which only deepened the perception that this was not a neutral selection.

That matters because public perception in politics is shaped less by internal explanations and more by visible signals. Once the candidate is widely seen as “the leader’s friend,” the burden shifts to the party to prove that the choice was based on organisation, electability, local work, caste arithmetic, coalition strategy, or constituency-level data.

Ajitha’s Bypass

Ajitha Agnel was not some random outsider suddenly claiming entitlement. Reports indicate she had already built a profile inside TVK’s Thoothukudi structure and had openly sought a stronger role in the district, with her frustration surfacing well before the candidate list was announced. Her supporters appear to have viewed her as someone who had put in groundwork and expected either recognition or advancement within the party.

That background is what makes the Srinath selection politically explosive. To cadres, it can look less like strategic deployment and more like a message from the top: long-term local work may still lose out to personal access to the leader. For a newcomer party trying to build district-level loyalty, that is a dangerous impression to create.

Christianity In The Mix?

There are unconfirmed reports that Srinath is reportedly a Christian and his father was a missionary in Africa. It is noteworthy that Thoothukudi has a strong diocese. How else would it make sense that Srinath, a Hindu, be fielded in a such a demographic?

While both Ajitha and Srinath are reportedly from the same fisherman community, Srinath’s father being a missionary seems to have tilted the scales in his favour. This seems to prove that the Christianness of Srinath did give way to his candidacy in Thoothukudi over Ajitha; the closeness of Srinath and Joseph Vijay is an added factor that could have cemented the choice.
