Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) president and MLA Prof. MH Jawahirullah on Friday, 20 February 2026, took to his X handle to strongly criticise the Maharashtra government’s reported decision to cancel the 5% reservation for Muslims in education and employment.

In a statement, Jawahirullah said that during the tenure of the Congress–Nationalist Congress Party alliance government in Maharashtra, reservations had been introduced on the basis of social justice, providing 16 percent for Marathas and 5 percent for Muslims. He alleged that the present BJP-led government in the state had now moved to completely withdraw the quota for Muslims.

Jawahirullah contended that the Muslim reservation had earlier been upheld by the Bombay High Court and accused the state government of first failing to fully implement the provision and now abolishing it altogether. He described the move as one that undermines both the law and the judiciary.

The MMK leader further alleged that retaining the Maratha quota while cancelling the Muslim reservation reflected what he termed a pattern of discrimination against minorities. He maintained that reservation should be viewed not as a political concession but as a social justice mechanism intended to uplift historically marginalised communities.

According to Jawahirullah, the decision would further distance the Muslim community from access to education, employment and positions of authority. He characterised the move as contrary to the constitutional values of equality, social justice and fraternity.

On behalf of his party, Jawahirullah urged the Maharashtra government to immediately restore the 5% reservation for Muslims.
