A clash broke out between two groups near Valliyur in Tirunelveli district over the construction of a centenary entrance arch at a church premises, triggering tension in the area. The confrontation, which escalated into a physical altercation, has drawn attention after videos of the incident surfaced on social media and began circulating widely.
According to local sources, the dispute had been brewing for some time in Keelavaneeri village near Valliyur. Differences had reportedly emerged between the current church trustee faction and the former trustee faction over plans to construct a centenary entrance arch in front of the church.
The situation came to a head on Sunday following the conclusion of the church’s worship service, when members of both groups held discussions regarding the proposed structure. The talks soon turned into a heated verbal argument, which escalated into a physical clash.
Visuals from the scene show members of both factions, including men and women, confronting each other and engaging in physical scuffles within the church premises, leading to panic among those present.
